SALZBURG
A delegation consisting of Javier Gimenez, Minister of Industry and Trade in Paraguay, his deputy minister Rodrigo Maluff and Paraguay's ambassador Dr. Juan Facetti travelled to Salzburg on 2 February 2025 to further advance the groundbreaking cooperation with the innovative company PARAFUEL. The company, whose venture partner is the entrepreneur Michael Kühlwein, is dedicated to the production of green methanol in Paraguay. Together with his business partners Thomas Seiler and Liz Pereira Colmann, he is responsible for a true flagship project for sustainable energy and global climate change, with an investment in the triple-digit millions.
Green methanol is considered the most efficient synthesis product for storing carbon from the atmosphere and hydrogen from green energy in liquid form. Compared to conventional fuels, it completely eliminates fossil CO2 emissions, thus playing a significant role in the global climate change.
The PARAFUEL company, founded by Michael Kühlwein and Thomas Seiler, together with Liz Pereira Colman, plans to acquire land in Paraguay for the construction of a future production plant for green methanol. Together with EPC partners and local joint venture companies, the first phase of realisation is planned to start in 2025. The total investment volume is in the three-digit million range. The start of production of 25 million litres of green methanol per year is planned for 2027, with an ambitious expansion target of over 300 million litres per year in the following years.
The planned production plant in Paraguay represents a milestone for the South American country, which will play a pioneering role in the field of green energies as a result of the project. At the same time, the entire region will benefit from the close economic cooperation and the pioneering technologies that PARAFUEL will use.
Michael Kühlwein, who hosted the visit in Salzburg, was delighted with the high-level visit: "International cooperation is essential for a sustainable future. With our project, we are making a significant contribution to CO2 reduction and the development of renewable energies in Paraguay and beyond."
The visit of the Minister of Economy and the Paraguayan delegation underlines the importance of this binational cooperation and highlights the potential of the PARAFUEL project. Together, the participants are sending a strong signal in favour of sustainable energy solutions and are driving the green transformation forward.

Paraguayan-German investors are interested in establishing a green methanol plant in Paraguay, leveraging the country's renewable energy resources. They met with government officials to discuss an initial pilot investment with plans to scale up for exports to Europe.
The project, led by PARAFUEL, a Paraguayan-German company, aims to produce a significant volume of methanol in its initial phase, reaching the eight-figure range. Green methanol is made by combining hydrogen with CO₂ captured from the environment, offering a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, particularly in aviation.
The preferred location is Asunción, but discussions continue. Experts highlight that green methanol technology is already well-developed globally, particularly in Europe, where demand for synthetic green fuels is growing.
